Tastes DO NOT Differ!/

Today is a special day for my blog:  this is the post number 100! So I wanted to do something special and I will talk about one of the most interesting topics.

Remember, how in this post I came across subject of taste which I almost began to discuss right away, but then had to stop and leave it for a separate post.

I have no idea where this saying comes from but it is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! The tastes DO NOT differ, the taste is something that has rules and, shall be taught and self-trained, and developed in every person. And bad taste shall be fought, and judged and eliminated. Initially that saying probably meant the concept of taste as a person's preferences, choices and favorites. Only those are INSIDE the personality, and that's untouchable. Nobody shall ever dictate a woman what color she should wear, whether she should cut her hair, or wear make-up. Not even a man currently by her side! If a man wants to decide the length of your skirt, or hair, or the need for you to wear make-up - that man has to be ran away from ASAP. A woman's appearance is HER choice. That's also the reason why I am so against all those "must-haves lists", "basic wardrobe lists", color types (that season-connected division of all women into 4 types and, accordingly, then deciding what colors they are allowed to wear).

BUT! While preferences and favorites are all about your personality, your inside, there is something that takes them all OUTSIDE (as we all live in a society, and there is an outer world around us),  and that something is TASTE.

When we look at a woman and say "She has good taste", or "She is dressed tastefully", we don't mean that woman likes the right colors, or the right style, or she should like the same that we like. By taste we mean certain BOUNDARIES a person shall not cross in their looks. Those boundaries have nothing to do with your personality, your likes or dislikes, they are all about the outer world you live in. And, funnily, both the good and the bag taste are formed by the world around us.

So, what IS bad taste? What are those boundaries? First of all, that is wearing anything too revealing, too body-tight, too transparent, etc. That is such a tragedy in our society: women are constantly made believe they need to catch a man, and that they can only do that by attracting him with their body. What are we, animals? No, we are not: even in an animal world it is up to the male species to attract females, not vice versa...

So, why do women "undress" in their clothing? The answer is simple: bad taste. For some reason, there is a belief, that if you have a great, fit body you are supposed to "show it", not hide it. And there we have: those "condom-dresses", see-through cheap lace dresses, shorts with butts hanging from them, bare stomachs in the city, basically anything from this post, and so on. So if you see any sign of bad taste in yourself (like, you do wear clothes mentioned above, or you have a desire to wear those) - FIGHT IT, work on your taste, train it and develop it.

Don't be afraid of being yourself, BE afraid of having bad taste. Nobody is born with it. We are all born unique, and interesting, and deep. But then we meet the society, and it does it's best to poison us with bad taste. Instead of beauty, and art, and culture, we are being heavily intoxicated with the looks of celebrities being almost naked both on and off-stage, their butts in tight clothes and their cleavages hardly covered.

And then there is another evil: advertisement. Those brands and items being labeled as "must-haves", and, ironically - the poor-quality fakes of those brands. Those are equally signs of having a bad taste: either being all dressed in an expensive brand-name original, or its cheap meant-to-look-alike fake from China.  It is like dividing our society into two classes (better than any political differences would do!) - those who can afford the original (and brag about it in all that social media), and those who buy those fakes because they are cheap and EVERYONE else is getting those.

To me personally it is really easy to fight the bad taste (though I did have my failures as well!) because I had a very untypical family. My father was an artist, and a writer, and a photographer, and, the only one in this country, member of 4 Art Unions at once! So you must already imagine the kind of childhood I had! At the age of 4 I was being taken to an art studio every Sunday morning and I spent the whole day there surrounded by paint and clay, and taught by a talented teacher to follow my inspiration and imagination. Yes, I couldn't participate in those conversations with my classmates about the contents of popular Soviet movies (NOT the ones for kids!) which everyone was supposed to know by heart. I did watch those YEARS later, because my parents didn't think it was necessary for an 8-year old child to watch movies about adult relationships.

And my summer vacations haven't been very typical for the kids back then. I never spent my summers in the country or at "dachas", or at summer camps. The most of my childhood summer vacations have been spent at the Resort for Writers. We'd go there for the whole summer, with both of my parents. And my pastime there has been very unique. I did have enough peers around to play, to entertain ourselves, bit still the environment was very unique. All the modern writers of Belarus were there as well during the entire summer. Being around, being inside the culture - that's the main point in developing a good taste.

As much as the good taste I am talking about is about the looks, my parents have never given much importance to the appearances. Actually, the worst you can do for your little daughter is teach her beauty, fashion and so on.  Teach her art and culture and spiritual values, and later she WILL find her way into fashion and style and makeup, and what the most important - with good taste!

All those beauty schools, modeling schools, etc. are such a bullshit! They would teach you all that crap about basic wardrobe, must-haves, about how you are supposed to wear high heels as much as you can (as though they can make you feel and look anything special: most of the times heels just look ridiculous in everyday life, the only impression they make - showing how hard it is for a woman to walk on them, myself included; heels only look appropriate on a night out when the maximum activity you do in them is standing).

Or they will teach you how all the women are divided into 4 season-related color types, and how you are supposed to spend more on your bag and shoes, and even own a "status" bag, how you should dress according to your body type (yes, that is shit as well: the only boundaries are the above mentioned: nothing too short, too tight or too revealing).

It looks like those rules somehow aspire to turn women into some sort of grey (or "basic- colored") mass with no style and no personality - and no taste! Buying that popular $$$ bag or it's fake from China is identically tasteless!

Oh, and China! Why do we let our closets being garbaged and our money be wasted on that crap the Chinese are producing and whole-saling to our country (I mean all the former-Soviet countries)? Those puffer coats covered with awful prints, fur, rhinestones! Those short lace stripper-looking dresses made of synthetic material! Those maxi-dresses made of glass-like chiffon! Those leggings pretending to be pants in all sorts of colors, prints and materials! And even (Oh My God!) underwear! That is so awful! Why would women purchase all that garbage? Because it is cheap? So what? It is also low quality and even poisonous. There is no excuse at all to buy that. There are so many cheap affordable brands, there are second-hand stores, there are are private ads and auctions sites. Those Chinese web-sites do have pretty pictures of the is things, they are cheap - but everyone shall do everything to stay away from those Chinese whole-sale web-sites!

So, to summarize: embrace your soul, discover who you are, develop your inner culture and you'll inevitably find yourself having the good taste.
